Level Playing Field

A jockey wheel is somewhat considered a basic caravan item – but don’t be fooled by its simplicity!

Actually, it’s an essential caravan accessory, as many intrepid adventurers experiencing a jockey wheel collapse while manoeuvring their caravan will attest.

Recently, we completed a basic DIY with the AL-KO Premium 8in Side Wind Jockey. It was an effortless procedure bolting and clamping it to the side of a camper trailer’s A-frame. (NB. The side wind jockey wheel is most commonly welded directly to the drawbar.)

I’m also impressed with its user-friendliness – winding up or down is a cinch! And that’s courtesy of this jockey wheel’s internal gearbox which reduces the winding force required to raise and lower the drawbar.

Have you ever encountered a top wind jockey wheel being impacted upon by gas cylinders or tool boxes mounted on a caravan A-frame?

Well, the AL-KO Premium 8in Side Wind Jockey Wheel eliminates this problem as it’s designed specifically for ease of use in tight locations, allowing for unobstructed operation in an easier motion than typical top-wind versions.

It has a long body (minimum height 771mm; maximum height 1037mm) giving it space for AL0KO to press in four locating rings giving the user more flexibility in height.

Additionally, the side wind jockey wheel is supplied with premium zinc plated steel wheels fitted with 8in x 2in solid rubber tyres making manoeuvring effortless.

Suitable for static loads of up to 400kg, the AL-KO Premium 8in Side Wind Jockey Wheel will keep you ‘on the level’ while out in the ‘playing field’.

With more than 30 years’ journalistic experience, Peter’s brief predominantly centres on editorial reviews for Caravan World and Camper magazines. A relative late starter to the trials and tribulations of the RV industry, Peter has been making up for lost time caravanning and camping with his family around Victoria. Initially, Gippsland was the primary stamping ground free camping in idyllic bush settings such as Dargo and Licola, beside the Wonnangatta and Macalister rivers respectively. Other favourite haunts also became ensconced on the family camping itinerary – Jamieson in Victoria’s High Country, Whitfield in the King Valley, Princetown on the Great Ocean Road, and Bright in the Ovens Valley.
