We’ve been lucky enough to borrow the family A’van for our adventure around Australia, for when we won’t be off-road and in a tent.
Even though our caravan is fully equipped with all that we could need, it obviously isn’t the same as being at home. So, before we left, we made a few changes to turn the caravan into a haven we’d be happy to shack up in for 10 months.
Here are three simple steps to take to turn your caravan into a home away from home.
- Update the Interior
It’s amazing how colour and patterns can change your mood. Add a touch of personality to your caravan by choosing cushions, doona covers and floor mats in the colours you love.
Before our trip, we bought new fabric to sew over the old curtains, and we also made new covers for the kitchen bench seats and doona.
- Bring Items from Home
Rather than buying everything new, take a few things that you already have from home. We’ve brought along our brightly coloured kitchen utensils, tea towels and even bath towels. You use these items every day, so they really help to make your caravan feel like home.
- Add Small Touches
Before setting off on a big journey, think about the little things that make your home what it is. We’ve brought along some family photos to pop on our bedside table, and even some scented candles to add a nice aroma to what can be a very confined (and sometimes smelly!) space.
It certainly doesn’t cost too much to make your caravan a home away from home, and it’s well worth the effort. The small changes we made to the caravan, like covering the curtains and seat covers, have created a place that we are comfortable living in – and have even made life on the road that little bit sweeter.
Drew and Court are a Melbourne couple who are travelling around Australia for the next 10 months. They’ll be writing about their experiences for Without a Hitch, giving us the real story of life on the road.
In their next article, Drew & Court discuss how they store their caravan.
