Once we set our sights on doing the big lap of Australia, we knew our ’04 Ford Falcon sedan wasn’t going to cut it. We’d been saving to buy a new car for a while, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to upgrade to a 4WD. But, as with any car purchase, there were plenty of options, and we had a lot of requirements for our new tow rig.
On top of purchasing a new car, we also needed to figure out where we would actually be living for the duration of our adventure. Rooftop tent, off-road camper trailer, caravan… the list of options seemed endless – and expensive.
So the research started, and continued, and seemed like it would never end.
Choosing the right set-up for our trip took months of research, careful deliberation and a little bit of luck. But in the end we think we’ve settled on the best tow rig and caravan combination for our needs. Drew was the mastermind behind this research project so he’ll walk you through the combination we chose to carve out our big lap of Australia.
Drew and Court are a Melbourne couple who are travelling around Australia for the next 10 months. They’ll be writing about their experiences for Without a Hitch, giving us the real story of life on the road.
In their next article, Drew & Court will explain how they went about accessorizing their tow vehicle for the big lap.
