Replacing An RV Entry Door Handle

Here, we show a simple step-by-step replacement.

STEP 1:
Separate the main and flywire doors.

STEP 2:
Some tape around the interior handle keeps it in place.

STEP 3:
Remove the internal handle mounting screws with a screwdriver.

STEP 4:
Remove three screws – two are visible and the third is located behind the slide plate.

STEP 5:
Now separate the handle from the door.

STEP 6:
Use a screwdriver to release the retaining clip that holds the door lock tumbler and remove this from the body.

STEP 7:
Remove the locking barrel that also contains the exterior door handle from the body.

STEP 8:
Now separate the exterior handle from the body.

STEP 9:
Install the new exterior door handle into the body, ensuring the small coil spring that is supplied with the new handle is remounted in this position.

STEP 10:
Place the locking barrel back into the body so it aligns with the new exterior door handle.

STEP 11:
The key lock installed within the new exterior door handle.

STEP 12:
Place the exterior door handle and its body back onto the flyscreen door and insert the three screws.

STEP 13:
Check the new exterior handle operates freely and that the key lock works.

STEP 14:
Rejoin the flyscreen and entry door, and check the internal door handle open/close and lock.

MEET THE AUTHORPeter Quilty

Peter Quilty
With more than 30 years’ journalistic experience, Peter’s brief predominantly centres on editorial reviews for Caravan World and Camper magazines. A relative late starter to the trials and tribulations of the RV industry, Peter has been making up for lost time caravanning and camping with his family around Victoria. Initially, Gippsland was the primary stamping ground free camping in idyllic bush settings such as Dargo and Licola, beside the Wonnangatta and Macalister rivers respectively. Other favourite haunts also became ensconced on the family camping itinerary – Jamieson in Victoria’s High Country, Whitfield in the King Valley, Princetown on the Great Ocean Road, and Bright in the Ovens Valley.
