When you’re in the market for a second hand caravan, you should do some research, as there are many Australian-made caravans that you can purchase. Here, we give you a list of questions to ask a seller, and offer tips on what to look for when buying a second-hand caravan.

Has the caravan has been in any accidents?

This should be top on your list of what to ask when buying a second-hand caravan. This question is important as the caravan may have damage that you can’t detect at first glance. Ask for accident reports or written repair notes from the mechanic to see if any major adjustments or modifications have been made to the van.

What’s the caravan’s registration history?

If you can’t get this information from the seller, you may be able to request it through the state’s vehicle registration office. In some Australian states, you can to check the status of registration online.

Is it fitted with extra features such as electronic stability control?

Electronic stability control on your caravan means extra safety for you and your passengers if you’re involved in a critical road situation. Caravans can swing, causing you to lose control of the vehicle.

What is the availability of spare parts?

While most people opt for a newer pre-loved caravan, others prefer a vintage model. Ask the seller how easy it is to get spare parts so you can avoid frustrations when you need to repair your caravan down the track. Do your own research too.

Can I give the caravan a once-over?

Before you agree on a time to view the caravan, ensure the seller knows you’d like to thoroughly check out the van, inside and out. Look out for mould and rust, check the doors, tyres and windows and have a close look at the gas and electricity system.

Has it been off road?

This is important if you’re buying a van to take off the beaten track. Ask how well it handled the road and how it was maintained after it was shaken up on rough roads.

Is it roadworthy?

A used caravan may be out of registration, or transfer of ownership may not be granted due to safety regulations. In some cases, it may not be compliant with your state’s road laws. Ask for a compliance certificate for fittings to ensure the van is roadworthy.

Can I have my mechanic look it over?

If you’re interested in purchasing the van, ask if you can take it to a mechanic you trust.

You now know what to look for when buying a second-hand caravan but it’s important to know exactly what you’re buying before you hand over your money. Consider renting a caravan first to ensure you buy one that best suits your needs. rent a caravan
